The Impact of Social Media on Journalism

In this day and age social media has started to become the mecca for information and is transforming the industries around it. It is has revolutionized marketing and advertising. Is it's next subject digital journalism? What is the impact of social media on journalism?

The impact of social media on journalism has been positive overall but there are challenges to watch out for. According to an article published in 2022 by PewResearch, "Among journalists who use social media for their jobs, nearly nine-in-ten (87%) say it has a very or somewhat positive impact on their ability to promote stories, while about eight-in-ten say it helps their ability to connect with their audience and find sources for stories (79% each)." Social media increases the ability for digital journalist to publish faster, have greater accessibility to content, and reduces costs. There have also been new mediums for journalist to try such as podcasts and livestreams!

The negative impact has been an increase in misinformation, bias, and sensationalism. Social media has allowed anyone to become a journalist overnight which can lead to misinformation and disinformation. These mini journalists may not have the appropriate resources or correct facts, spreading unreliable content around. Another challenge is that social media accounts typically use an algorithm to filter content. This can create a bias, only allowing certain audiences to react, manipulating the narrative. The final challenge is getting sucked into sensationalism and click-bait. It is theorized that social media hurts the integrity of journalism, reducing it to clicks and comments.

How to navigate this every changing digital landscape? Social media can be a great source for information but it is best to double check facts, sensitive information, and validation of publishers and its content.

  1. Hey Sydney, great post! Social media has become one of the reasons why Journalism is becoming, for lack of better terms " a dying field". There is a certain art within it that social media will never be able to capture. I've had my fair share of misinformation on social media and always opted for doing my own research, especially with sensitive topics such as politics and medicine. Can't wait to read your next post!
